Paul, that's nothing....on my next visit I'll be going up to Craggy Pinnacle at 5,892 feet with 360 degree views. I wanted to go last Thursday but I was about to run out of gas and did not want to risk going further up the mountain! As it was I had to coast 18 miles down the mountain back to Asheville and barely made it. I was never so happy to see an Exxon station in my life.

I was in Asheville around 7-8 years ago on business and was lucky enough to get a free weekend there. From my recollection the trail was built during the great depression in order to provide jobs? Beautiful area.

The Appalachian Trail was started in the 20s or 30s, but this isn't the AT. This trail is in the Pisgah National Forest, which is HUGE, and links up with the Mountains to Sea trail, eventually. There are loads of trails in that area, it would take ages to hike all of them!
Asheville is really beautiful, the city itself and the surroundings. I love it there.
