is your house wood Lori? you must have super insulation in there with your winters.
i like it, makes me think of a candian Hans and Gretl cottage.
stones, concrete blocks, wheelbarrows, plastic flowerpots, fairly recently laid flags - no doubt by yourself- yep certainly feels like home, mine ;~))

Thanks Cinders...LOL...yes Resi, very relaxed and homey. It began as an equipment shed!! With about 4 additions it has become a very comfortable (if small) home for two old retired people! almost without exception all the houses built in Canada are wood frame...it's the material of choice ...we have acres and acres of forest and lots of logging done here abouts...the lumber in our house is dimensional...it was home grown, cut and milled!

A super de luxe Hans & Gretl cottage,
how often do you have to treat or paint your wood? with your climate it must get a lot of hard wear, i suppose it is pine, Douglas fir?

Part of the trim and all of the siding on our house is heavy gauge vinyl.....it is tough, weather resistant and paintable. If it becomes mildewed, or appears stained, you simply wash it with soap and water!
I painted a lot of the trim last summer and it looks like it will be a bi-annual job. when I made the deck I didn't like the idea of working with the chemically treated wood...so bought regular lumber and painted each piece after cutting with two coats of heavy duty exterior grade enamel paint..That should buy us at least 10 years of use before rot sets in.
Pine is a really soft wood and is most often used indoors...for outdoor constructions like decks, gazebos, or exposed porches it's best to use the naturally rot resistant woods like hemlock, fir, redwood or cedar. It still has to be sealed though. the extremes of temps from season to season take their toll...not much we can do about it.
