I had a friend in the garden the other day who asked me the name of this plant . . . senior moment - all I could think of was the name of the gardener who put me onto it! So thank you Hywel! The plant of course is Sanguisorba tenuifolia 'Alba', here being visited by an unknown Wasp.

Good old G**gle . . . it's a species of Mason Wasp (Ancistrocerus trifasciatus) Barbara. Don't recall seeing one in my garden before.

Ancistrocerus trifasciatus: A potter wasp they live in hollow plant stems and he is right on time they visit flowers from June to August.
One of the easiest to ID by it's stripes and shape. Nice plant too.
Just noticed you IDed it already.

Saw my first wasp of 2012 yesterday. Lurking near the door of the garden shed. Wonder why they haunt the places you want to sit or do some job? Lovely photo....at least this one is minding its own business, on a flower.
One year we had huge numbers of hoverflies and the wasps from a nest near by, hunted them down against the canopy roof, then beheaded them. Too much info? made me dislike them even more.

Is that a wasp on there, or a bee, not sure when I look, if it is a wasp it is very early
