Yes. This is the one I had in a pot a couple of years ago.
What you see is all this years growth.

Then I'm rather jealous!

You can grow this in a pot.
On the right you can see my Rattle Box tree (it's not as close as it appears in the photo)

Got it!
Gotta store it if I grow it in a pot, and I no longer have a conservatory.............

Where are you going to put your tender plants?

Greenhouse, shed and I'm going to cover the seating area at the top of the garden too.
The bulbs can be stored in the cellar.

All sorted then.
I planted my Bird of Paradise in the garden spring time .....it looks dead! I can't believe it.....after 7 years from seed I put it in the garden and it died!

What an absolute downer!!! Did it ever bloom?
5 Aug, 2012
No. ;o)
It's still in the garden, I'm leaving it where it is. I saw the top roots and they are still white and plump.

Alexandramou:
Your sago palm looks great!
Isn't bird-of-paradise commonly available for sale there?

It loves it in the garden. Like I wrote to Meanie, this is all this years growth!
Yes, I will be buying a new plant.
Do you think there is a chance it's still alive....white fleshy roots?????

Sago palm tends to put out 2 and sometime 3 flushes of growth a year here in San Diego. I guessing you get the same amount of growth there?
Yes, I think your bird-of-paradise is still alive. Most likely it'll come back from the roots. It probably needs water and a little fertilizer.

Well, my Cycas usually puts out 1 flush in the summer. Mind you, it's only been in the ground about a year.

It looks terrific for being in the ground for one year!
14 Aug, 2012
I agree, it did really well this year. ;o)

Sago palms loves high temps. They grow well even in the low deserts of California and Arizona.
I meant to note that here in San Diego many young sago palms put out only one and possibly two flushes of growth a year. It's the large well-established ones which push sometimes three flushes of growth a year. Overall: the sago palm is pretty slow growing.
15 Aug, 2012
Hhmm, I must check mine to see if another flush is getting ready.
There are many Cycas planted in Corfu town and you are right, they grow slow.

Yes, sago palm is very widely planted here, too. The queen sago (Cycas circinalis) is very popular along with many species of Dioon and Zamia. I've posted many cycads in the past...as the San Diego Zoo has the second largest collection in North America...yes, all of North America! lol! :>)
