This creature is threatening the ash trees here in eastern Ontario...as it has caused problems in the south-west and over in the States (Michigan)..there has been a concerted effort to deal with it and I notice that there are "counter measures" available.
In a forest of hardwoods the fast growing ash is not exactly welcome...it grows quickly and like the poplar, dies from the top down, littering the forest floor. Among it's dead limbs the prolific seeds germinate along the margins of the forest starting the march of their army to reclaim open land...and that's where my problem stems. You should have no trouble getting them to grow, Sandra. I think they are also salt tolerant and will rebound and flourish even if lopped off an inch from the ground! In fact I can guarantee that! lol...;-) looks like I will have to pull roots if I plan to get rid of them!
I have tall mature Maples and some middle aged oaks in the area that I want to foster..and given that there is another oriental beetle which is threatening the maples I'm hoping to keep my little stand of forest as clear of ash as I can.

the biggest tree i can see is an ash, there are lots in the hedgerows so i know my babies will grow up one day. i want to plant them on our boundary so we can harvest them for fire wood. i have been practising coppicing on a few and they are throwing up so nice logs for my shed fire.

Ahhhh yes...I can see where it would be perfect for coppicing. It is a very fast growing tree and that would make it excellent for fuel. That's the trouble over here with the ash borer...it is transferred from area to area by firewood. It came here in the wood of crates used for shipping. I should send you a few of my acorns.

i have lots of tree seedlings....we all bring seeds home from visits around the place. labernum, ash, pine, cypress and lots of other lovelies...i will have my woodland one day..lol

Good for you! We have tall basswood too...tilia? it's a soft open grained wood that's used mostly for carving. I love it's flower's scent and the leaves are huge rounded dark green beauties...I think you call it lime, right? They grow very tall and tower over the other trees but the maples are the trees of our forest...I have found some lovely oaks too, as I said. Reforestation is a lifelong pursuit, Sandra....may you live long and prosper! ;-)
