Thanks Wells, Latin names actually make it easier - the more unusual the name, the easier to remember when I browse the garden centre! (which I do a lot!)
Hard work I can cope with too, but I have bought a couple of plant books to save wasting money on plants which won't grow in my garden conditions.
I have added these so far:
Kalmia Latifolia Angusitfolia (Sheep Laurel)
Aeonium Zwartzkop (in a pot)
Lonicera, Camellia, Magnolia, Rhododendron, Iris
Chelone Obliqua (Turtlehead)
Choisya Sundance and Aztec Pearl
Philadelphus/Mock Orange
Garrya Elliptica James Roof
Photinia Red Robin
Fingers crossed that I start to see some results next year!

Welcome to the Art of Gardening which like any other art. risk and failure, more risk, failure. keep going, ah, a bit of success, and finally HARD work, and you succeed! It is so rewarding, no matter how grim your soil, equipment and choices are. Eventually you will learn, how much water, how much fertilizer, what grows in your garden and does not seem to grow anywhere else. And so it goes. Yes, I do believe these are Petunias. The common, old fashioned kind did not have a different color in the center. I am not sure if I like it. But the yellow is clear, however smaller. Oh, I forgot to say, don't worry about the Latin names at first. You will pick up all the names eventually.
