This is a nice Elephant's ears specimen at Quail Botanical Gardens. I have one also...however, it's not doing so well.

Yes, it is. This plant can develop a trunk to 8ft tall.

I think you're thinking of Colocasia, which doesn't develop a trunk. Alocasia is typically more tropical than Colocasia.

I should say: some species of Colocasia do develop a small "trunk" in time. However, I don't think any species of Colocasia would be hardy enough to be evergreen and grow all year in the UK.

I kind of figured. That would happen in the San Francisco Bay Area when I would sometimes get frost (even though a very light frost).
