About 8'x3'.Divided in half. The plants that need protection,or would be better with it are in the right hand side. Those in the left would be perfectly happy left to the weather.

Brian-I already have the timber, exactly as you describe, from Wickes.I was thinking of doing it in 2' sections to make it easier to handle.I'm looking at acrylic sheets for the top.

If you do it in 2ft sections it will be easier to handle and better supported that sounds good, the acrylic sheets are fine they will let more light through, take care if you drill them all that stuff cracks all to easy. a burnt hole is a better option if its practical,

I wondered about a red hot skewer, would that go through acrylic.

That is pretty substantial job there,Bit of straight forward carpentry to cover, a bit of 2x1 in treated timber fom Wicks screw together a 4ft x3ft frame screw four legs at 90deg to the frame as uprights,Height as you wish, screw on some PVC sheet, and dont forget a taper to the back so the water drains clear of the pots when you screw to the bench.
Will do a scale drawing if you like, can't do much else in this weather
