Just to let you know Shirl, I've bought some and they're in. According to the 'blurb' on the pack, they may not flower in their first year, but if I'm patient (something I'm not known for) I'll be rewarded. Can't wait...oh dear, there I go!

Waddy I do hope some of them will give you some pleasure next year. They surely will in years to come.
These I have, that now seed themselves, don't seem to take long getting established. Perhaps they like living in gravel! We have a membrane under this gravel, but it has been down for years now, so maybe the membrane will have gone rotten.

Patients is a virtue so they say and you will require a degree of it ,you say you bought them in a packet, what else if you have no other source.
Did the packet tell you to soak them as they would be very dry probably 2011 seed,
If not would suggest as alternative you put them out in the rain for a couple of weeks then pull them back into some shelter for the winter and let them get frosted then with a bit of luck some may germinate as the days become longer.failing that it will likely be Aug/Sept 2013.
Use some chicken wire as cover as anything and every thing will try pulling them out
