This has taken a couple of years to rebloom as it has been busy producing a keiki on the end of an old flower spike! Three flower spikes though, one of which is on the keiki.

Do you fertilize it Meanie ? and how often? The leaves and the roots look so healthy. I have not got much success with mine to re-bloom

Nor me Klahanie . . . would love to know how to encourage re-blooming.

Thanks Sticki - I love its wild look.
Klahanie and Sheilabub - I rarely remember to feed. They're lucky to get watered sometimes! I do keep the humudity high around all my houseplants and Phals love that. Read this blog by Spritzhenry for tips on reblooming them...................

I take a similar approach and it works.

Thanks Meanie. I rarely have any luck with following links, and this one took me to a page of symbols (Japanese perhaps?)! So I'll look in Spritz's blogs and see what I can find . . .

Yes! Found Spritz's blog (Awkward Orchids) . . . brilliant, informative, and now in my faves. So, many thanks again Meanie.

Thanks Meanie I'm off to read that as well !
Done that ! I remember reading it at the time but it's a good idea to refresh the old memory :o)

Thanks for the link Meanie

Remember Meanie I was moaning recently about my 2 orchids that haven't bloom for ages? looks like my moaning helped - they are producing a nice flower stems... and the rest of my orchids just won't stop flowering, lol.

It's all good advice! I must admit that I leave my Cymbidiums out as close to the first frosts as I dare and they rebloom every year for me.

Once you've worked it out it's easy isn't it Kasy!
5 Nov, 2012
yes, it is Meanie. sometimes it takes different approach, lol

Certainly does Kasy!
My Hippaestrum cybister is still outdoors to encourage flowering.

I thought a keiki was when its under stress or thinks its going to die, looks very healthy to me
8 Nov, 2012
mine must be very stressed ~ it has 4 keikis on!

Hmm - my Hippeastrum is bit strange - the size of the bulb stays the same for few years... Never seen keiki - but I am growing orchids more seriously only for 2 years now.

Stevie - a keiki is perfectly normal. They can occur at any time at the base of the plant, but this one is on a flower stem which is indeed a sign that the plant was distressed in some way as the stem approached blooming.
Sticki - or it may be too happy if they're at the base of the plant!
Kasy - once a Hippaestrum bulb reaches flowering size that's it. It should start to produce new bulbs soon hopefully.

no! they are all on stems!!! ooooops!

Had the stems produced flowers? Was it a recently bought plant when it started the keikis - if so the stress of the move from the conditions of the store to the conditions of your house would be enough to kick the process off.

There were flowers on the stems, I can't remember now how long i'd had it, possibly not long, the cat knocked it over and broke at least one flowering stem,

I have one phalenopsis with the flower stem that produced few branches. Looks like I managed to break it slightly trying to straighten it.
As for my Hippeastrum bulb Meanie - it is very small, I even have an impression it has shrunk a bit.....??? Have to repot it and start feeding properly...
10 Nov, 2012
That would distress it Sticki!
"Looks like I managed to break it slightly trying to straighten it. "
I think we've all done that Kasy!
Less a need of a bigger pot Kasy - more to do with the growing conditions I think. Is it too warm?

Iciar - now I keep an eye on all of my orchids - noticed a new flower shoot so keep turning it around - and I am so exited about that particular one - as it flowered only once when I bought it back in 2007 I think...
As for my hippeastrum - errr - how to say that - bit neglected? I am one of those people - can give you plenty of advices how to grow houseplants but you sort of can't see that knowledge applied to my houseplants... I am not good at feeding my plants have to admit. And never really have time for them... And keep forgeting about watering the plants above my eyesight, lol.

Kasy - for some strange reason some of my posts are attributed to Iciar! No idea why.
I never feed my Hippeastrum. Took me ages to work out that it needs a cool spell to bloom though.

haha Meanie - it happened before - comments appearing under different avatars. Well - I know that they like dry spell in summer but I kept mine at home instead of leaving it unattended in the garden this year. I don't water it during summer season - but it's bit tricky here in Wales, as there is plenty of moisture in the air. But this year kept it on a sunny window, so just one leaf remaining looking miserably, lol. Hope it'll flower on me soon;)

If it's a small bulb would it not be better to keep it evergreen for a year or two to allow the bulb to grow (rather than use up its stored energy)?
13 Nov, 2012
that's a good advice Meanie - I bought it as a proper size bulb, it's shrunk a lot. Need to repot it, new compost, sunny windowsill and fingers crossed;-)
