Phalaenopsis hybrid orchids are some of the easiest plant to grow outside. I grow my outside all year and when they bloom I bring them indoors. Photo taken in the Botanical Building, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. on Nov. 13, 2012.

The lath house (Botanical Building) was originally built specifically for orchids back in 1915.

wow... it might be a scene! Only orchids there?

Yes, it must have been quite a sight. Now, many other tropical plants grow along with the orchids.
The only problem with the building is...every 8 years or so the laths need to be replaced. I've seen some of the laths breaking and bowing. It's kind of nice to see the plants growing through the laths and seeking real sunshine, though. :>)

Their way is the best though :)

They will bloom all summer long outdoors here - probably too hot there for them in your summer?

Meanie:
No, my plant was blooming during the God-awful sweltering heat, humidiy during August, Sept, Oct.
I've seen the hundreds at the San Diego Zoo (under the trees) blooming during summer. They don't seem to mind the heat. However, the flowers last longest during the cooler months.

That is true. Also the slugs and snails take chunks out of mine outdoors in the summer!

Yes, you definitely have to protect the flowers from snails, slugs.
Luckily, the snails, slugs are not so active in summer...however, right now they're becoming very active. Last night we finally had a few very light warm showers (the snails came out by the hundreds).

They're not very active here after the frosts!

You're lucky! Winter is the worst season for slugs and snails.
