Gardenia jasminoides 'Mystery' - Mystery Gardenia

Gardenia jasminoides 'Mystery' - Mystery Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides 'Mystery' - Mystery Gardenia)

I've never seen Gardenias look so good, so close to the beach. They love acidic soil, not saline soil...and this plant, plus the Gardenia hedge in the background was loaded, I mean loaded with flower buds. They should be starting to bloom soon. Photo taken at the Catamaran Resort, San Diego, CA. on Feb. 23, 2013.

That looks beautiful, only ever seen this as a small indoor plant.

I've seen large 12ft (4m) tall Gardenia 'Mystery' shrubs before in the San Francisco Bay Area. The soil here in San Diego must be amended very well with acid-producing mulches for Gardenia to grow well.

I was just so shocked all these shrubs looked so healthy and had so many flower buds. Gardenia jasminoides typically needs more heat to produce their flower buds.

even indoors i struggled to keep this plant going ~ it didnt flower well at all but its a beautiful plant ~ how amazing to have a whole hedge of it, i bet it smells heavenly when its out;

i have the acid soil ~ but no heat!!

why is it called 'mystery'?

Would love to be around it when it blooms......

Yes, Gardenia shrubs can be very difficult to grow! They need acid soil with warm to hot sun and water, but not too much, though. LOL!

My favorite Gardenia species are tahitensis and crinita which grow here; however, are extremely sensitive to cold. The first one is native to Tahiti and the second to Malaysia.

Have never tried, although the GCs say they are hardy, I do not believe them....

Gardenia jasminoides is hardy to around 18ºF (-7ºC), the flowers are not nearly as hardy. I don't think the flowers would even take freezing temps.

No I am sure your right....

It's just a matter of getting them to bloom during summer. They do like quite a bit of heat.
