Repotted Acer Bonsai

Wow! How big was the cutting when you planted it? That's done really well.

Difficult to say, at least half the size it is now, I think it was in bud

When I repot the Bonsai I use Akadama soil as a top dressing laid over 40% grit mixed with ericaceous soil, the Akadama is little clay balls making for a nice, neat and clean looking pot plus they are a good guide for watering

oh, they sound a very good idea ~ those clay balls ~ do they help retain water too?

Yes they do retain water, when they go light beige its time to water ~ you can actually use them as a complete medium without anything else, they are perfect for drainage but a tad expensive.

Great photos, superb garden.

I use half baked non-clumping clay cat litter (Sophisticat Pink) as an alternative to Akadama. It's far less expensive and doesn't break down as quickly.It's light pink in colour when dry and terracotta colour when wet.
Also excellent for taking cuttings and planting seeds.
