Useful Australian shrub which will grow in moist, fertile soil in part shade, sheltered from cold winds (I'm growing it facing west, on heavy clay improved with garden compost). Up to ten feet tall and five across

hey andrew, I like the look of this as I am looking for a nice glossy shrub for some privacy in one corner . Its for clay, moist but neighbours conifers might take most of it, bit of sun from the west.
So I better ask- is it an evergreen and fast/slow growing? Will it take a prune if becomes too big?
Think you were leaving to go on your hols recently (? my memory is a bit unreliable :) ) - did you enjoy?, thanks, Sarah

Sarah - it is evergreen. Mine has reached five feet in four years, despite being planed on the edge of a canopy of a mature magnolia. A sheltered, west-facing position is the same as mine gets. The books only talk about a gentle reduction rather than a massive pruning, so it may pay to do it on an annual basis (after flowering) rather than wait several years and then attempt a big cutting session. You will need a specialist nursery to track it down - mine came from Glendoick Nursery in Scotland (who offer mail order).
Yes, I had a great holiday. I'm now ploughing through about 400 photos (mainly of plants), and hope to write some blogs about it later in the year.
