Just been talking on another thread about compost. Found this in my last bag.

Goodness Cinderella....Is it wood?...Looks more like an iron bar!!!

Its a piece of metal tube. No I didn't complain, just took it to the dump. But I certainly didn't expect to find that in the bag. I may have a word when next I go to the shop,

Thought it was a snake at first glance Cinderella!!

Yes, I think we have all been noticing the decline in compost recently. So far westland's John Innes is still excellent quality...but it does contain peat I think.

It does look a bit like a snake. I don't mind having some peat, as my streptocarpus need it.

Pity you didn't return to the place you bought it, you paid money for the weight of that instead of the equivalent weight in goods, it sounds petty but i'd be miffed.

Cinders
Your soil needs iron, In years gone by gardeners would bury there broken tools under Hydrangeas to improve the colour.
Louise1 where have you been for the last 3 years.!!
Oh I remember.

Morning B, yes, been through the wringer but have come out the other side without too many creases ;-)
Nice to see you :-)

Very true Brian, but can't grow hydrangeas in my soil !
Louise I did feel a little miffed, but whats the point of getting stressed about these things really, I probably should have complained to the makers.

Nice to see you Louise! I don't know what life's been doing to wring you out, but I'm so glad you've come out the other side!:))

Cinderella, it's the principle of it - and i'm hot on principles.

Morning Karen,
Thanks for that, older and wiser these days ;-)

I recently bought some sacks of compost from a local City Farm. So far I've found:
a plastic carrier bag, tied at the neck but slit at the side, so whatever was in it managed to escape;
length of plastic-coated wire;
several lumps of wood more than three inches long.
have been thinking of contacting them and suggesting that they let their staff know what counts as "compostable" and what doesn't!

..yes, indeed, or perhaps suggest they invest in a riddle!

That's bad. I would have taken it back.

One way to be sure is to find stables with WELL ROTTED manure and bag your own!
We did it a couple of years ago and it was really good stuff.
Blimmin' hard work though!!
However, the stables have moved now and I don't know what happened to the 'mountain' of composted manure!
If I felt like doing it again (which I don't really!) I would try and find out.

I'm amazed at the size of it,Cinders..you could have hurt yourself ,if like me,you get your hands stuck into the bags, with gloves on,I might add..that is really unacceptable..did you practise weight lifting before you got rid of it ?..just wondered if you bent it like that in anger :o))

Ha Ha Sandra. That was where I hit someone with it !!!
No, I went back to the shop yesterday and they said they would give me another bag and apologised, so that's something.

I thought youd found a snake or sloworm...lol.. my compost I bought has large bits of wood in it most annoying....
3 Jul, 2013
Lol,Cinders..so glad you did something about it,and at least got a free bag..did it feel heavier than usual ?? ha ha..
3 Jul, 2013
Holly I would have moved a bit fast if it had been a snake !!
Lol, Sandra, justice was done ! I didn't carry it, I have a man I call on for that.

How bizarre! Did you complain about it? I know compost isn't what it used to be but I've never seen anything like this in mine!
