I love this colour combo, would go well with Alstroemaria Inca Ice! This is a must for my dahlia pots next year. Well found my dear!

If I keep them in the pots, can I just bring them in for the winter?:-)

I left mine out last year and they were fine but I kept them very dry and the pots were on feet. I didn't have room in the greenhouse.

How big a pot do they need? Would they be ok in a garage which has quite a lot of natural light?:-)

Nothing to lose BA. Think would be okay. Collect some rainwater and just run thru when soil is completely dry and again if the pot dries out again..poke your finger down about 2" just to see if damp..if it is, don't water. The tubers will stand fair amount of cold but they hate wet. If you put in a big pot I would guess you wont need to water at all. I put tubers in rose pots (about 3-4 litre size) stood them on a rack in the lee of the house against the house wall and didnt water all winter. They were quite dry and most survived.

Drat..hit the button, the rest were in 2 big pots under the bottom wall and sheltered by the clematis montana (big overhang of branches) they were fine.

Thanks, I would love to be able to keep them:-)

I've just remembered, on my favourites is a blog by, I think, frank, he hasn't been on for a while and he showed how to increase your dahlias. I'll have a go and I could send you a piece of tuber:-)

Ha - I had to use the 'search' box to track this down, Ba. Yes, it's a lovely one.
How big across is the flower?

They are easy to divide probably around end of March, if you have left them in soil throughout the winter shake or wash it all off and you can make as many as you can find growing buds with either a single complete tuber or several joined together any broken or rotted tubers cut away with a sharp knife dust the wound with a fungicide or yellow Sulphur leave to dry for a couple of days and replant.
My Dad taught me that 60 something years ago then we used to dig them up in November wash and dry them wrap them in newspaper and keep them on a shelf in the outside toilet there was an oil lamp in there to keep frost free It did not always feel like it.lol

Brrrr Brian..I remember those freezing nights so well..and we had to go down a flight of steps to get there too!

BA, I would love a little bit, but don't go disturbing your planting. Maybe next spring I will catch supplies early and nab some. You are a dear tho for offering.

Thanks for that advice Brian, I haven't really gone for dahlias before, but couldn't resist this one. I have bought the odd beauty before, but left it in the ground where it survived for a couple of years, but I REALLY want to keep this:-))

Tet, look how you two grew up with gardening. I was lucky if I saw a flower, the only greenery was the occassional chickweed growing through the cracks in the pavement which people gave to their budgies:-)

BA if I learned anything about gardening its how much more there is to learn!
