Comma Butterfly

Its the only coloured butterfly I have seen this summer in my garden plenty of white ones .

I haven't seen one of these in my garden yet,Kidsgran,but plenty of Red Admirals ,Peacocks and all the Cabbage whites..such a great year for them all :o).

Lovely picture, I have seen only one Comma butterfly so far this year and was so pleased when I noticed it.

I did not think we get these in Scotland and your buddleia is way ahead of ours here. Thank you for sharing with us. We have seen Peacocks, Orange tips and Tortoiseshells already but not nearly as many as we hope will appear over the summer. I just googled Comma and discovered it used to be one of the most common butterflies in the UK but declined probably due to the diminishing availability of its then preferred plant, hops. They retreated in to Gloucestshire and the neighbouring part of Wales. Now it is becoming more widespread and it now favours nettles. It has been found on the Dundas Estate which is midway between Scottish and I. It has also been found around Kinghorn in Fife. They are named Comma because of the only white mark on their underside which looks like a comma.
