Salvia 'Amistad'

Salvia 'Amistad' (Salvia)

This lovely plant is one of my new Salvia collection. I bought them as plugs from Hayloft in the spring and they have done really well. This one is so large I had to plant it in the ground, so I really hope it survives the winter.

It's a real risk Moti, but I really can't dig it out...it's huge. I'm going to take a chance and hope for the best with some straw mulch or something similar. :)

It will be fine with a good mulch and lets hope for a mild winter...Its such a gorgeous Salvia...:>)

Isn't it dramatic? And the sunlight has a super effect on it too!

Hiya Karen, lovely photo of Amistad? I bought a Salvia of similar colour last year called, S. 'Black 'n' Blue' - it was just one, long thin stem with flowers. I thought it stood little chance with the cold, but I'm happy to say it has survived. It has tripled in size, but, has yet to flower. Apparently it reaches a height of 2ms. Another Salvia I grew this year was from seed, it's called S. 'Lighthouse Purple' - more beetroot colour than dark purple, it's supposed to reach 3ft, but, as yet its only about 18ins if that. I'm not sue if it'll survive, just have to wait and see!

How lovely to hear from you again Helenium! yes, it is lovely...and it's one of a collection of plugs I bought from Hayloft this year which have all been really lovely. Two yellows ones, two peachy ones, two deep dark wine/magenta ones, a red one, two coral ones and a gorgeous bright blue one called South African sky. I've got them all, except this one, in pots and I'm going to overwinter them in my unseated greenhouse. This one will stay in the ground.

Thanks Karen! I've been reading posts and blogs but I'm nowhere near up to speed with everyone. I've just looked at Hayloft plants and the two peach Salvias are gorgeous. I hope they all grow well for you.

I've just looked at the Salvia Black and Blue on the unwins ad right hand side of this page, and it says height 90cm and yet on the label I have it says 2m. I think I'll do some searching.

Had a look and some state height from 24in - 6ft. Could be the different conditions its grown in - might favour one more than another.

Yes. A lot of my plants grow taller than they have permission to grow as well! They are not very obedient!

21 Aug, 2013

Te, he, he. Yes your right. I mean... does the plant say, my label says 3ft so I better stop growing now! Yes I have a few that have outgrown by a long chalk the height stated on the label!

Talking of obedient have you ever grown the said named plant? I did, the large pink one - big mistake, obedient the flower may be but underground is a whole different matter - it run everywhere a real pain.

Ecuse my nosiness, but, did you have the mirror in the photo specially made for the garden? It's Fab!

23 Aug, 2013

Thanks so much..no I bought a plain acrylic mirror and we had to saw it off at the bottom, then OH made a timber surround to make it look more like a door. :))

It's a job well done - really effective, me likes loooooooots, in fact, I'm going to show OH the photo of it - heavens Karen aren't I real copycat.

It's the best form of flattery Helenium...go for it! :) I think I may have got the mirror sheet from Primrose online :)

Cheers for that Karen - I will look them up!
