Philodendron species

Philodendron species (Philodendron)

My Philodendron is growing in my broken greenhouse. It's been in there for a few years and has grown roots into the ground. One day I must dig it up and put it into the ground in the front yard. Photo taken Sept. 10, 2013.

"One day I must dig it up and put it into the ground in the front yard."

Will it become rather rampant?

No, it's actually grown quite slowly. I would think with lots of water and fertilizer it could grow much faster (most likely not rampant though). Although, with this being said; I don't trust many vines in my climate...as they grow a lot faster than what they're "suppose to grow".

We have the opposite trouble here....................

That's one of the reasons that I'm looking at various Bomarea species - some are quite well suited to our climate. although you need to choose carefully.

Some Bomarea species are suppose to stay small; however, I've seen some species in San Francisco's Strybing Arboretum (now San Francisco Botanical Gardens) which were covering huge trees.

B.hirtella can get quite large here in a season. B.salsilla has the potential to if it's well sited. Other species are a bit hit and miss apparently.

Are most Bomarea species evergreen there? I would guess if they are evergreen like here they have the potential to grow very large.

No, they die back over the winter. I keep seedlings going over their first winter to build the tubers up, but after that I let nature take its course.

I see. So, there they have no potential for getting out of control. That's probably a good thing.
