for my record. Planted September 16 2013
Light green spring growth matures to deep black-green in summer and forms a dense, irregular pyramid. An interesting specimen in most any style landscape including Asian and formal English gardens.

I agree Terra, that is probably one of the reasons I bought it. Interesting, that you have noticed. :-)

Looks strong enough to keep a good shape even as it grows ..

I hope so. It has a good spot and lots of room to spread.
It is not a big tree ...at least not in my life time.

I have seen very large specimens of C japonica, one at Chartwell in Kent, W Churchill's home, but as you say, it will take a long time to get to full size, also perhaps the variety you have bought is more dwarf than the usual sort
37mtres high by 5m in width!

Was it "Black Dragon" cultivar Feverfew? All sites I looked at say 10 ft tall, 5 ft wide. I know that other Cryptomeria japonicas can grow very tall up to 70-80ft. This one is (apparently) smaller or perhaps slower growing? I hope it will not grow 37' in my lifetime.
