He looks like something out of a B horror movie - the stuff nightmares are made of. This guy seemed to be hamming it up for my camera.

He's a praying mantis, a large carnivorous bug. He can turn his head and look straight at you. He's actually very beneficial to have in your garden in that he eats many harmful bugs and pests.

Yes Suey187, I always thought these were the coolest bugs. What's really creepy about them is when they turn their heads and look you straight in the eye. They do a great job getting rid of aphids, caterpillars and all kinds of other harmful pests in the garden but they are rather shy and harmless to us. I've done a little research on them (Google) and they are way more fascinating then I first thought.

I used to see them quite a bit, even had one jump onto the lens of my camera while I was taking pictures. I love seeing them and never use sprays when I know they're around

wow, you went back to my very first posting. :) They are interesting critters, and a big help in the garden with pests and all.

Yes, I've enjoyed looking at your pictures. I've only been to New York once but I loved visiting the northeastern states. Out of everywhere in the US, it is probably the best area for growing plants because of the climate and soil.

I guess we in the Northeast are fortunate in that respect. The soil here is very dark and rich with sufficient rain. Gardening is a true joy. thank you :)
