This one of several African Tulip trees in this area at Costco in Mission Valley, San Diego, CA. Photo taken Sept. 10, 2013.

Very extraordinary and cheeky for me ;-). It is like the tree from Wonderland or the tree zou can see after eating hallucination mushrooms. Lol.

It's pretty common here in San Diego and throughout Southern California. It's a grafted or cutting-grown tree only. It doesn't come true-to-type from seed.
I'm not sure where it was discovered originally...I would assume somewhere in the wet tropics.

I see lots of large, red ones in Mexico. Does this one grow as big too? I like the size as in your picture.

It stays smaller, overall. I've seen some almost 40ft (12m) tall here. The red ones grow to more than 50 ft (15m) tall here.
With this being said: most small urban yards keep their African Tulip trees around 30 ft (10m) or shorter.
