Well, I am hoping that it likes shade/sun. Similar to the situation that suits a hydrangea. I'm a bit hit and miss!

Mine is in mostly shade and blooming heavily every year and the scent is wonderful. I think that you are right on with the hydrangea growing condition comparison.

i might get one for under the front window and if can be done train it to go either side...

I planted a Philadelphus "Dame Blanche" in a full sun bed back in 2010 and it gradually disappeared, obviously hating it, Klahanie :-) So I thought a change of tactics was in order.
