We have a similar one, does it have yellow leaves?

I have both forms DD. This is the green leafed form which seems the stronger grower.

Meanie do you protect your Salvias, so far ours have come through the last two winters, but will they make it through a really bad one???

"so far ours have come through the last two winters, but will they make it through a really bad one?"

Crikey! Where were you the last two winters?

Seriously though, I have no idea as far as S.elegans goes. S.glutinosa, "Black and Blue", S.forsoakkoalii (spelling?), S.sclarea and S.microphylla seem bombproof.
S.patens at the very least needs winter protection by way of a mulch, but as it is easily lifted I just lift the best ones and store in the shed with "Wendys Wish", "Black Knight", S.dolicantha and a couple of others.
S.discolor is toast at the merest whiff of frost!

Thanks Amy!

I wouldn't say last winter was a bad one, long yes, perhaps you had a more severe one, after all this is the south, now 2010 was a shocker here.…??

"I wouldn't say last winter was a bad one, "

I need to move a bit further south by the sounds of it! Or toughen up!!!!

Meanie:

It sounds like you need to move very far south. Maybe as far south as where I live at 32º latitude or possibly even further south...then you can grow all your plants outside, all year, like me.

I do believe that you're right Delonix!

Oh, I'm always right! LOL! :)

Right now I wish I was much further south! Northern California is being hit by a unusual freeze and Southern California is being by unusually cold weather. This is after very warm to hot temps all of Nov. and the first 3 days of Dec. being 80 degrees (27ºC).

Ha!!!
Although I wish your plants no harm, I would love to see your reaction to a frost! Do you ever visit NY or Chicago in the winter!!??

7 Dec, 2013

Meanie:

Although, it's been very cold the last two mornings with lows of 45ºF (7.2ºC), the temps are still much too high for frost. The urban area where I live in inland San Diego never receives frost. It's truly frost-free. The temps will be below normal for the next couple of days, then 70ºF (21ºC) weather will return by Tuesday.

I never visit NY nor Chicago in winter! I've never been to Chicago. I would love to visit Chicago in late spring or summer!
