It blooms most prolifically in the middle of winter. It gets a few flowers in summer, though.

Yes, hummingbirds love this plant. The large guava tree which had the hummingbird nest last year is right next to this plant.

I'm hoping the hummingbird will nest again in the guava tree, again. I've read they will nest in the same tree many years in a row (but not in the same nest).

Yes, I hope so. If the hummingbird builds a nest in the guava tree I'll take more photos of the nest and babies like I did last year.

These are great. Some are better at blooming then others. Sort of luck of the clone from Walmart.

My mother who lives in Hayward has one in her front porch which faces south. It's huge and flowers all year. My mother's plant looks better than mine here in San Diego.

I had one that was taken out in '92. It was like you Mom's plant,always in a good bloom. The ones I have now are ok..but not as good. Maybe the ones from days past were of better stock.

Was it the 1990 freeze? I don't remember a freeze in 1992. The 1990 freeze was the worst freeze ever recorded in the SF Bay Area. 1972 was the second worst freeze recorded in Bay Area.

That's true maybe the plant stock has changed. My mother's large, old plant produces see and in the yard. Which to me is pretty incredible! My plant doesn't even produce seedlings.
