To give you an idea of how I protected my plant for the first couple of years. The downside.....slugs like to over winter in there too!
This isn't the Cardoon - it's Zantedeschia getting the same treatment.

Yes, I pin or even a couple of garden canes stuck down to stop it blowing away if the wind is strong.
An upturned wire basket - about £1 from DIY stores. Cheaper than buying rolls of wire.

i think i remember the point now of £1 wire basket in a blog of yours (regardless) i know now... so thank you...

Good idea Scottish, we put baskets over our pots to stop the squirrels taking the bulbs....

that is a cool idea...I have some little A frames over some of the box because the snow is too heavy sometimes and breaks them in half. But I could use these by the dozen for markers!

you see i would not have thought to pin down with the wire....good photo by the way in that i can see clearly on how to do this type of covering....is it a upside down hanging basket thing or as it looks to me wire that's been curved over?
