This is the red echium I have. It is over a year old and should flower next year. As the leaves die, they form a mat around the plant, cutting down on weeding - very few things grow under an echium plant.

The blue ones are real bee magnets, and are full of them when in flower. I just prune the flower heads and they survive very well, except they need staking for the wind.

Interesting information Wylie wish they were hardy here, remember growing a blue one once sent to me as a young plant by a friend, I planted it out and covered it in fleece for the winter and was really pleased when it flowered, the insects loved it which is always a bonus :-)
