Sunset is always pretty on Lake Superior. Every time I have gone up there I have seen the northern lights too and it's always an incredible sight. I've also seen a tornado touch down just off the shore

I envy you Rkwright... The Northern Lights are an incredible sight! I saw them here a couple of years ago - it's amazing that on very rare occasions you may be lucky enough to glimpse them this far South (Canterbury in Kent!)

there was a burst earlier this year, apparently seen in Jersey in the Channel Islands and south Wales, but apprently they missed Shropshie! the next night was clear, so i kept popping out to check, but no luck.

Every 4-5 years it seems like I catch sight of them where I live in southern Michigan and nearly every time I go to the Upper Peninsula I see them, especially in July for some reason. It's beautiful seeing them over Lake Superior, they are always bright and colorful. Most of the time they are green but I have seen red once too. I just wish they were easier to photograph, I have tried but the pictures never come out good.

they run in 11-year cycles, I believve, caused by the sun's 11-year sunspot cycle. Read that we're just coming out of a sunspot maxma, so aurorae will start to taper off over the next few years.
lol if I don't go to Iceland soon I'll have to wait till the next sunport maximum, about 15 years away!
