Plants in tyres 2

This is great and I'd like to try it if that's ok with you.
Did you use spray paint on the tyre?

I painted mine with a brush and paint that I mixed with a little bit of water, but spray paint also works. It's quicker and easier (probably more expensive:I guess you'll have to use several spray cans to cover all the black outside).

Oops!, didn't stop to think about cost. So filled with enthusiasm. I'll rethink as soon as I get a tyre. Hopefully from the local garage.

The garages around here are always happy to get rid of tyres. They have to pay to have them recycled. When we ask them we get as many as we want for free! ;)

What do you line the tyre with? For drainage

Well, I didn't do anything! I just use the tyres as they are, and didn't even poke any holes. The fact is that when it rains, not much water goes in (I have them facing south); when it doesn't, I often have to water the plants. The inside of the tyre works as a kind of greenhouse and is warmer than a normal container. I also try to mix plants that require different amounts of water (in the case, the opposite of current rules). The idea is to balance the absortion of water.

maybe puting a layer of gravel at the lowest point of the tyre would act as a kind of filter to keep plants above any water that did collect.

Yes, it's a good idea! Something I'll have to consider. Still, it wouldn't be bad to make tiny holes in the bottom, to drain the water if there's a lot of rain in the place.

maybe make an "overflow" hole up a bit from the lowest part?
