Dwarf hemlock with a flat-top, similar to 'Muttontown'. I've had this for several years and it is very slow-growing and the needles are always dark green, more so than my other hemlocks. I didn't know anything about this when I bought it and still don't but I loved the shape and was curious to see what it would grow into.

I can't give you an exact number but you can see the new growth on it in the picture and it's not very much. My regular Canadian hemlocks have grown 4-6' in the same amount of time. I'd guess this one has grown about 6 inches since I bought it.

wow, that's some difference! it should be a decade or three before it gets large enough to be a nuisance - if ever

I love Canadian hemlock, I don't think they could ever be a nuisance. One of the reasons I have so many is they can be sheared to any height.

they're a bit outwith my area of expertise - as are most plants except pansies! but I'll look them up, they sound itneresting

I have several that I've been growing for years since they were seedlings, most of them are grown up by now. It's funny that all the info I read on them says to grow in sun but my experience has taught me they really do best growing in more shade. They're beautiful evergreen trees and there are varieties in all shapes and sizes.

how many do you have? shouldn't think I'd have room for may "trees" here

I have either 5 or 6 Canadian hemlock, if I had more shade in my yard I would probably have several more. They can reach close to 50 feet tall but I've seen them maintained as a hedge as low as 10 feet tall.

ah, I don't think I'd have room even for one - heighth would be a bit much, even at 10 foot, I think. n
besides, ot fair to it to buy a tall plant and keep cutting most of it off, I should get a plant that grows small[er] naturally

that looks very compact indeed - how much has it actually grown since you first bought it?
