Looks like the everlasting sweet pea, or perennial pea vine that my Mum has growing against a garage wall. I cut it down annually and it always returns with a lovely bright magenta pink display of blooms.

thanks Shirley. I'm always a bit wary of cutting things back in case I do it wrong and they don't recover.

These were almost buried from view by the shrubs on either side, it wasn't till the gardener cut them back that he found them.

How far down do you cut them? I mean, ground level, just aboe, or what?

Once they have finished flowering and are making seed pods (just like garden peas!) I cut all the foliage off to about 4 inches above the ground. Mum's actually grows through the concrete drive way, by the garage wall, as do Lily of the Valley!

wow! that's one determined plant - or two, with the LotV.

so when these have faded I'll cut them a hand-width from the ground - how are they at being moved? thought about replanting them somewhere they'd get more light, though I'd need to find support for them.

Hmm, something I have never tried Fran, but they've got two chances! :o)

lol that's true. hope there's more than one plant - i can experiment with one and leave the other, just in case.
