I've often wondered - are pineapple plants monocarpic?

Yes, it's a monocarpic plant; however, it develops many off-shoots like most Agave species. Sometimes it'll develop plants off the central upper stems.

I wish I could grow pineapple in the ground well, like I see some people do, here in San Diego...however, at my place the bugs love to eat all the roots. I think a safe systemic might have to be applied.

You can also replace the plant by rooting a new one using the top of the fruit I believe?

This plant is from the top of a store-bought pineapple. This is why I know the variety. It's probably the sweetest pineapple I ever purchased at a store here in CA. In Hawai'i most are very sweet.

I'm no lover of Pineapple on the whole, but I cook with them a lot.

Have you ever tasted a real pineapple...not a store-bought one?

My dad always says the ones they sell here in the grocery stores is ones they used to give to the pigs in Hawai'i when he was growing up (because they're so horrible!).
