I actually needed to move these plants to let the handyman get to the wall behind them to put up brackets; thought I'd stick them on the stacks of spare bricks for now

thanks Waddy. It's not there now - I had to take those bricks down to get at the bricks in the bed, to rebuild it, and that used most of the bricks. But I'll shortened the bed, so ther's a planting space at the end - I'll try to get something in that'll grow tall enough to shade and shield hte pond - I've got some ornamental grasses that might do

That sounds a nice idea :)

i'll need something as a windbreak - it fairly whistles down the side of the bouse and splats anything in the way - my empty composter was sent sailing half-way down the garden! so I'd want something to shield any water feature i put in, at least a bit. i had thought of a rush screen, but tall grasses should do it, a bit, anyway. only one way to find out!

We had that once Fran in that really cold winter some time back. A freezing gale blowing through a 4 inch gap near the side gate hinges froze up the condensation pipe to the boiler 6 feet away. Defrosted with the hair drier and boxed up to lag the pipe. A narrow gap seems to make a wind tunnel. Pity it can't be incorporated into our housing to cool us down in a heatwave. I noticed in Pollensa the women picking over dried bean pods and gossiping in an archway under some houses. The gate was closed and slatted with wide spaces. I bet they were cool in a breezy shade.

I did think of gettng a gate along the side of the house, but the wind's got to go *somewhere*, and if I block the natural flow, who knows where it'll get diverted to, with possibly worse conseuences? Maybe a slatted gate, to break down the force, would do the job.
