Sciadopitys verticillata 'Wintergreen'

Sciadopitys verticillata 'Wintergreen' (Sciadopitys verticillata (Japanese Umbrella Pine))

Just got this a couple days ago. I wanted to replace the dwarf variety I had planted there with a larger one. Japanese Umbrella Pines are beautiful trees and this variety really does keep its dark green color through winter.

oh, that's nice. how big is it rated to grow?

It should grow to about 20 feet tall but where they grow naturally they can reach 100 feet or more. I've read that this variety will grow 9 inches a year but I'd be surprised if it grew more than 6 inches annually.

shee, Good thing that it's got a slow growth rate - at least, I assume it's towards the slow end of the scale. should take 40 years to reach 20 feet - lol maybe take a couple of years off tor the height it's already got.

How wide would the root run be? I read somewhere that the roots extend about as far as the folaige does, but obviously a different guideline is needed for trees that are taller than they are wide.

It has grown close to 6 inches this year and I think it was grafted 3-4 years ago. It might average 6 inches for the next few years and then grow faster once it is well established. I pay close attention to growth rate so I will find out eventually.
Most of the feeder roots will be at the drip line of the tree but the anchor roots can be more than twice the width of the tree. It really depends on the tree, soil and weather. I was over by Lake Michigan last weekend and there are a lot of trees growing on very sandy slopes. They are exposed to a lot of extreme weather and fast draining soil so the roots of a lot of the trees spread out a long ways and also go very deep into the ground.

so many people plant trees too close to the house or other buildings or walls, and the root spread plays havoc with them.

good to see you're methodical about recording growth, should think about doing a bit of that myself, even though most of the shrubs are already grown - maybe start measureing after they've been cut back!
