Thanks for your comments everybody. I discovered this tree growing in Union Square in the middle of New York City.
Sandra (LOL She's Back!) This is a red version of my tree with the shedding bark. Mine is white. They also come in violet, pink, and purple - something for everyone, lol

Yep ,I'm back Paul ! Lol..suitably refreshed after a hot sunny week in Exmouth..:o) Heavy rain this morning, which has delighted my plants, and I even spent the morning baking cakes..no,not an Orange one this time:o) Sun is out again, and time to be outside till our overnight visitor arrives, for bed, breakfast and evening meal..I might not be as chirpy in the morning ! Lol Love that tree, whatever the colour..it's a beauty ..x

Beautiful. I think I bought this tree (Lagerstroemia indica) last summer but I doubt that I will ever see it look like this. I would be delighted if I see it bloom one year. It survived the winter.

Welcome back Sandra. You sound so refreshed and full of life. It's so sweltering hot here with no rain in sight I would love a heavy rain. I'm out there with my garden hose everyday trying to save my tomato plants, LOL. However, I would do backflips over hot coals for a piece of your orange cake.

Klahanie: These trees are much more common in the southern states mainly because they can't take the long cold winters that we get. The white one, seems to be able to take it better then the others.

I am more worried about our wet winters Bathgate. It is pretty soggy (not too cold) here and some plants just do not like it so wet.
I am glad that your white one is doing well. I did see it in some of your pictures.

I guess our winters are quite different experiences. Last winter was particularly cold with back to back snow storms - not too wet though.
