It could have been a baby one like this one. They don't have the red breast at first, it is quite speckledy, then gradually turns to red as it gets older.

I assumed that the red had been toned down as it was no longer the mating season (or so I assumed!) so it wouldn't need to attract females and warn off males, but you're very likely right, it looked quite small.

sweet! I saw my first robin last week, or i think it was a robin: something thumped down on the edge of the plastic planter about a yard from where I was sitting; small brown bird, I thoght, it mustbe a robin, nothing else would be so bold, and I was willing it to turn around so I could see its front; it did eventually, and it looked reddish-brown, so I'm counting that as a robin. Not seen it again, sigh.
