Don't know this one at all. May we see a photograph of the fruit later please? What does it taste like - is it in fact a sort of tomato?

When and if I get some fruit I will certainly post a pic. As to the relationship with a tomato, I don't think they are related but someone else may know better.
They are not common even in the US but are becoming more so because they are used in a lot of Hispanic cooking. They are available in supermarkets here in the south, but I wanted to grow my own.
They are a small fruit encased in a papery husk and are used for green salsas and sauces. Taste tart and yummy!

Yes the Tomatillo is in the Solanceae family that's the family of the Tomato and the Potato as well as Deadly and Woody Nighshade, the climber Solanum crispum and Chinese Lanterns. The latin name of the tomatillo is Physalis philadelphica while the chinese lantern is P.franchetti
