Pyracantha-Firethorn

Clever robin! This morning we have such a heavy dew that we can see all the tiny spiders' nests on the shrubs and trees in the garden . . . plenty on top of the weeping birch, so now we know why the birds love it!

Yes birds are pretty smart. I would never believe that our cockatiel could learn so many tricks until he showed me. :-)

Hi, Klahanie, this is very popular natural fence here. But these red Pyracantas are rare here, we have mostly orange ones. I have three bushes in my garden, too, but I trim it regularly.

I do see the orange ones along the road sides. Looks like people plant them as a hedge ....as you mentioned. I like the orange one as well but we inherited these two and my husband does not like them because he has to trim them and they are prickly....as you know. I should plant them as a deer protection around our 8 acre property :-)
I wonder why you do not have more of the red. It propagates easy from cuttings. They are both very ornamental at this time of year and I like them both. The yellow and orange pomes are more striking.

In a neighbouring village they have a very long fence made from orange P. I will make a photo if I go there next week. I think it could be solution to your problems with deers! Moreover, leaves of this shrub are edible also for deers.

Interestingly, our deer will not eat Pyracantha. He will nibble on barberries, though.
I can just imagine planting pyracantha around our 8 acres. Maybe I should have started in my past life. LOL

Or maybe you are right, that deer nibbles berries and not leaves. I read somewhere about "nature friendly" green fences, e.g. those, where birds and small mammals can find rescue and food, but large mammals will not cross. And Pyracantha was listed there.
And yes, you are late now, you should started to plant that fence earlier, lol.
