Prettier than the spider you saw and uploaded its photo on 5 Sep? Yours looks very "Eeeeek!" to me, compared to this colourful one!? A spider as big as a cat? Ok it was just a joke, but dog was scared? B*lls! (Please excuse my French; it's my OH's mum's bad influence lol)

there are a lot of large spiders this year but we have a cat who loves to leave just the spider legs lying around on the carpet.

There are always lots of spiders in/out of our house therefore I didn't notice the existence of the big spiders this year. So your cat plays with spiders and probably eats the body, leaving only the legs on the carpet.. My cat Lucy loves to climbs up on a windowsill and catch then eat mosses trying to escape from the house.

My cat loves to catch flies too and swipes at them as she moves along the window shelves in the conservatory.

Lucy loves to catch grasshoppers too.
I love to watch Lucy doing all these non-serious hunting -- she looks super serious and just adorable.

Love the garden spiders... gives me a little bit of a shiver when I walk into their webs. tensile strength of steel! X-(
I was surprised to find out that we have opuntia cactus that is native to Canada...here in Ontario! I have an agave in my perennial bed, and wouldn't a lovely opuntia just make the picture complete? Thanks for the inspiration, Tommy!
Had to edit...forgot to say what a great pic that is.

Thank you very much for your comment, Lori ♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪
Agave and opuntia would be a great combination, definitely! Look forward to seeing your new perennial bed with them together soon.

Alas..it probably won't be soon...but I am on the hunt for the native opuntia now. fingers crossed.

What else?
See who else is growing Opuntia ficus-indica (Barbary Fig).
See who else has plants in genus Opuntia.

Pretty spider :-), it just reminded me of a story in our local paper yesterday about some huge spiders that have been seen, apparently because of the mild winter more spiders survived and have grown to enormous sizes one man was walking his dog and spotted one he said he thought from a distance it was a cat what!!!!! surely its a joke, he said even his dog was scared.
