Next spring's run-off with tell the tale, Fran! I'm stressing about getting this done before it gets too cold for that reason. If I need more rock there is plenty down at the rapids, but it means heavy work hauling them back up the hill!

are they free to take? I mean, aren't they serving a purpose there? (I can remember going to Cornwall, and one beach had a sig telling people not to take any stones off the beach)

I don't think I could run out of rock...even if I built a castle, Fran! The stream is on our property so no problem there. They are used to control soil erosion and by placing them strategically in the stream, ponds will form, or serpentines, or rapids. It's fascinating to place them and watch the results.

wow, that's my dream to have a stream on my land (other than an uncontrolled runoff from too much rain!) a proper stream, nicely civilised to good behavriour (most of the time).
It would be fascinating to place rocks and watch to see what happens, how putting rock A here instead of there changes things; it'd be an endlessly ongoing study, I'd think, so many options and so many possible results.
Please share pics of some of them?!!

you have been busy Lori. I see your leaves have started to turn.

It was a colourful autumn, Sandra. It's the 20th. today...and most of our leaves are on the ground! we had rain, that always brings them down. The last week has seen the red/bronze of oaks and the bright yellow of the Aspen..usually the last to drop. It's starting to look Novemberish. We had a very limited snow fall yesterday afternoon. just a sugar-like sprinkling. We don't usually see any snow until later in Nov. Weather has been schizoid anyway. Who knows what's next?

at this time of year, batten down the hatches and prepare for the worst! Then any surprise will be a pleasant one, that it wasn't as bad as it might have been :-)

the wind is here today Lori...not many leaves left on our trees now. Coats on in the garden now best time to hit the brambles and the stingy nettles. I still have to put lots of things in my tunnel but i have to finish conditioning the soil first. waiting for a delivery of some lovely smelly manure!!! then i can wrap up my babies for the winter.

It is a type of closure. everything is ready for a rest. I haven't been conscientious about my compost pile ...it's choked with weeds and having been stung by wasps a couple of times I think I'll wait until we've had a week of good cold temps before trying to turn it. Soil work is so necessary but it sure separates the ladies from the girls! LOL! Thanks for the reminder...I need to talk to my farmer friend up the road about some cow poop, and get it spread before things are frozen. would be nice to have access to some horse noogies...nice and warm for the cold frame. won't be long til we'll be watching the snow dance...brrrr...
