I think the tree has been dying for years Feverfew, I just keep it there as a handy base for hanging bird feeders on!!
Katerina, I have no idea whether they are edible & I wouldn't like to be the one to test them!!

I sent your photo to one guy who knows mushrooms and I was told it is edible in some stage of development, but your look like they are fading already. He even gave me the name, but only in Slovak, I didn t find English translation. The same mushroom usually grow on oak trees here.

Thank you Katerina, they were going over by time I decided to take the photo!
However I don't think I would try them even with your information unless someone saw them 'in the flesh' as it were!!!
I do like a nice big 'horse mushroom' though with bacon & eggs!!

They're a nice bright colour. Hope their appearance doesn't mean you are going to lose your old tree.
