Grey Squirrel

Grey Squirrel

I know they can be pests especially at the bird table, but I just had to admire this ones lovely winter coat and his antics as he tried to get the nuts from the feeder!

I like the photo but do not like them replanting my bulbs or my neighbours bulbs in either garden.

Oh so that's where my crocus bulbs went !!

Pam24,
I thought they would only carry off bulbs which had not yet started growing but I was visiting a friend whose home backs on to a large woodland area. Suddenly she jumped up and dashed outside. When she came back indoors she was devastated because a grey squirrel had just pinched the last one of her rather expensive tulips. The woodland area was a picture with lots of choice plants all courtesy of the grey thief and his pals. Because the area is owned by the community, home owners can be charged with theft if they try to pinch their own plants back as they cannot prove it is their property. So yes, I think that is why your crocus have disappeared.

We also have two Hazel trees and I often find baby hazels growing around the garden where the squirrel has hidden his nuts!!

Did you know squirrels put their loot in their mouth and it gets covered in a secretion which means they are able to find it again. They should become goy members maybe they would share their secret formula with us to help us in propagating favourite plants. lol

Perfect pic - wow!
I didn't know that about squirrels; I thought they just had good memories or maybe just good luck. Squirrels haven't been an issue here, it's been moles and deer. And something unknown eats my trilliums every year.

Great comments everyone-especially about how a squirrel finds his food once buried! Amazing, I never knew that. I have watched a squirrel hide something however and a crafty magpie come and dig it up after he had left!!!
