It looks like it is growing on canes rather than from fans - is that correct?

There's no canes or anything Meanie the plant is only approx 9" tall excluding the pot and is supporting itself , this one I put out into the greenhouse as soon as the frosts are over and then bring back in before the frosts start again in the autumn /winter ,its pretty tough it has to be with me ! ....

Sorry - canes as in like your Dendrobium grows on canes (the structure of the plant itself). As opposed to a fan like growth habit like Cymbidiums have.

Yes Meanie they look like canes , sorry I've been a bit out of it lately my OH has been ill for weeks but is finally improving ,fingers crossed !

I hope that he gets better faster than Sues back is healing.

From the shape of the buds it looks like a Dendrobium, possibly D.hercoglossum or a related hybrid.
