This is one of several Cape Chestnut trees in this parking lot in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. There's a giant tree flowering around the corner from where I live and I need to get a photo soon. Photo tken in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. on March 18, 2015.

It's a beautiful slow-growing tree from tropical eastern Africa down to South Africa. It's somewhat hardy; however, temps below 25ºF can cause considerable damage to this tree...especially young trees.

Yes, the trees in the parking lot flower early every year. I think they love the reflected heat from the parking lot.
