CK Aquilegias like Chalky soil. Have a look at the RHS advice on Chalky soil. It should be easy to improve your soil so you can grow aquilegias. Many HP plants like alkaline soils in preference to acid soils. Do any of your neighbours grow them, if so they will probably be happy to give you a few seedlings to try out in different areas of your garden or in pots as they also like good drainage. They don't seem to mind poor soil so under the hedge might be a good place to try.

It is a lovely combination of colours and shapes Bjs.

That's really strange SG. Thank you so much for that information. Obviously I don't have chalky soil. Some of my Aquilegias have seemed happy enough in my other gardens, but they definitely don't like the white garden at the back here. That's good to know. I shan't bother to try them again there though. The ones I grew from seedlings last year didn't thrive. They flowered and then disappeared over the winter.

Fingers crossed they appear as seedlings in the future. I dk how long they take to germinate. The weather has not been good this past 6 months. As Bjs says they have the reputation of being short lived but if they did seed you might get a surprise one day.

Yes, thanks. They may do that. The aquilegias in all parts of my garden except the white garden are doing well, so not to worry.

Its the weirdest thing. i cannot grow aquilegias in this garden! Almost every single one. Has failed so far. I have no idea what on earth is happening to them. Its strange. The only one that looks healthy is the one thats in the middle of a hemerocallis I brought with me. i might take some pics later so you can see and maybe help?!
