I'm just plain surprised that it survived!

What happened to it? Typically, the flower spikes are huge with hundreds of flowers. Maybe it's still too young?

Two things. It's E.candicans not E.wildpretii and read my notes under the photo!!! These paltry few blooms are little miracles!

its a pretty delicate one I think I may have lost my E.amoenum 'Red Feathers ' there's no sign of it yet !

I have a seedling of E.amoenum. I lost several (don't ask how).

I told a fib !! I've found it half hidden under a shrub soon to be in bloom plus 3 tiny seeds growing in the greenhouse fingers crossed for them !

That's very true. We've never ever recorded such a cold temperature here (where I live, anyway).

E.wildpretii grows wild in an area called: Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco. These plants grow much larger than Wikipedia says. I've seen them pushing 30' (10m) tall. It's an incredible sight when they bloom.

I was lucky. But if the winter had been as mild as the last one I would have been super lucky as the one in the ground would have been incredible now instead of dead!

Amy - that's good news. So many plants are late this year. I bought an Arisaema to replace the ones in the ground that I'd lost - got back and found both had emerged!

Delonix - someone in Kent posted a photo on another forum of his five metre specimen last week! Not bad for the UK.

Go for it, they're easy from seed. The only tricky bit is overwintering them.
