Fuchsias typically don't do too well here...except for closer to the coast. They need shade and lots of water. They also like cooler conditions like you say. It would definitely hate the weather we're having right now. We're under excessive heat warnings for the next three or four days.

Klahanie - it is usually happy enough but this year it is positively elated!
Delonix - the SoCal definition of lots of water is different to the UK definition. This just needs some water by the UK standards! Lots of water here describes Gunnera etc ;)

I've seen some of the dwarf varieties in more sun and with little water and they look a little better. It's really surprises me that they can tolerate the heat here further inland on the mesas. We've had a heat wave for a week. The last two days here were 101ºF (38.3ºC).
