Codiaeum variegatum 'Angel Wing' - Croton

Codiaeum variegatum 'Angel Wing' - Croton (Codiaeum variegatum 'Angel Wing' - Croton)

My croton is growing very well and getting quite large. I've had it several years in this spot and it seems to enjoy it. Photo taken Oct. 27, 2015.

Lovely colours on this. How lucky you are. Shame we can't grow it here. Another one bought in "Tropicals" at the flower market for arranging.

Thanks. :>)

Yes, this shrub is very tropical. It's been loving the very hot weather we've been having here in San Diego, CA. since January. Although, we are going to cool down over the next couple of days into the low 70's F (low 20's C) for highs. It'll feel so good and refreshing after so many hot days in the 85 - 95ºF (29 - 35ºC) range.

This one is a beauty Delonix1. It must really like it in that location.

Yes, it loves this locations. It gets direct sun in the morning and early afternoon. It likes water, also.

Hard to believe you can grow this outside...

Dottydaisy2:

We're lucky we can grow many tropical plants outside in the ground here in San Diego (in fact all my plants growing outside are tropical in origin).

This one grows well outside as long as it receives water. If it doesn't receive water it will wither away a die very quickly.

I wonder how you would take to our climate?

I don't like cold weather. I don't like really hot weather, either.

This is year has been extremely hot in San Diego and through out most of California. January through May and July through Oct has been the hottest months ever recorded in San Diego. Most likely it'll be the hottest year ever recorded, beating out last year's hottest year. Our weather has been more like Miami than the typical year-round spring weather we're used to. It has a lot to do with the "Mega or Super" El Niño. The ocean temp off our coast is still averaging 74ºF (23ºC), temps this high have never been recorded this time of year (October's average was near 80ºF (27ºC).

The warmup of ocean water is all along the west coast. In southern California its at its greatest in the western hemisphere. Not sure why. The west is "orange" warmer than average and from Santa Barbara to mid Baja California its "red"..much warmer then average.
Even off of San Francisco they have been catching Bonita,Blue Fin tuna, and other tropical fish in waters 4-6 miles off the coast and 66f.
That Croton is my idol-lol. If I see one around January outdoors at Walmart or Lowes looking good? Thats the Croton I want.
When you buy them from HD's greenhouse...you never know who is made of mightier stock.

El Niño this year has many unknowns. The Pacific Ocean along the West Coast up to Alaska has been much warmer than normal. There's never been any El Niño recorded like this one before...so it's anybody's guess what going to happen this winter. I do have a feeling it's going to be very wet and crazy this winter, though. I'm just wondering how long the waters off San Diego's Coast can stay this consistently so warm.

Crotons are really beautiful shrubs.

I was at Walmart yesterday...many Crotons kept outdoors. All Mammy or Petra. Darn. I would have bought a Angelwing in any decent condition.
Stoplight is also very high on my list- I might order one in spring. I never see that one for sale.

I see Croton 'Stoplight' available here in San Diego. Typically, it's for sale at Home Depot and Lowes.
