This is an old tree that is sometimes called the "million dollar tree". It's not such a common tree here in San Diego. Although, seed is becoming more available. Photo taken Nov. 21, 2015. This tree is starting to loose its leaves.

There's a couple of Baobab trees at the zoo.

I was shocked to see Dave's Garden rating this tree for zones 9 and up.
Do you think that's right? Zone9 is mid 20's every winter..brrrrr.

No, I think maybe in parts of Florida. Baobab trees cannot tolerate the cold, wet soil. They will rot. It's native to areas of Australia and Africa where they get a very dry winter and rains in summer. The ones in Hawaii look great, though. Even in wetter areas...I guess because of its tropical climate.

The Delonix they rated as z9. Something I don't believe for a second.

It's a tropical tree, indeed. It will only tolerate cold when very dry. Just like most of the large D. regia in the deserts survived the horrible freeze of January,2007 (worst freeze in 75 years) with minimal or no damage.
