Hi Stan I used to keep chickens. The first ones were Warrens and lastly Buff Rock Bantams. The Bantams were really sweet and I used to tuck them under my arms sometimes. They only laid a small egg but they were really good. I kept two British Alpine goats as well and used to milk them twice a day. I made cheese, yogurt and ice cream with the excess. I kept bees for nearly 30 years, I had two hives. It's a great life with good food as we then had a large vegetable patch and a small orchard as well as a large field. It's also a large commitment for the sake of the animals welfare in keeping them healthy, their bedding nice and clean, and generally looking after them properly. Linda.

Bee's! I wish. They sound like a whole lot of intense care with the new Bee disease and Pesticides. Still, looks fun.

I had to give up keeping the bees as Gerry became allergic to the sting, but it was a wonderful time and so interesting. I now have four little bee houses that mason bees live in and I talk to them instead. Bee keepers have a tough time keeping their bees now. There are diseases that were present then like the Verrora mite but you have to keep an eye on things like that and I think there is a lot more chemicals used now and with hedgerows disappearing and some gardens becoming cemented over, instead of lawns and flowerbeds the insects have a tough time of it.

they are great fun to watch but i wouldn't want to keep any...they would become pets...we do have chickens. just 2 black rocks who very rarely lay , I am off to collect 6 ex battery warrens tomorrow. My friend has some and they didnt look to good when she collected them but perked up and started laying after a few weeks.
We were given a full bee hive years ago. They lived at the top of the garden. They were happy up there and produced at least 2 swarms. we didnt collect the honey just left them to it.
In my dream world I would have a cow with the amount of milk we get through...lol

Hi Sandra, Chickens do go off lay in the winter months. We had a few Warrens that were quite young from a battery and it took them a while to look well but they turned out to be lovely hens. They used to love scratching about in the earth.

I'll make it festive and say While Shepherds watched their flocks by night......or at school a long time ago we used to sing While Shepherds washed their socks by night all seated round the tub......
